Monkeypox, now officially referred to as mpox, is a rare viral disease transmitted to humans from infected animals (rodents, primates) or through human-to-human contact with infectious material from skin lesions, body fluids, and droplets. Symptoms include fever, headaches and muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, and a characteristic rash in the form of pimples or blisters. Treatment is symptomatic, while in severe cases antivirals can be used, and vaccination as well as adherence to hygiene measures are recommended as prevention. In the Czech Republic, it was first confirmed in 2022.
Our laboratory, as one of the first in the Czech Republic, offers testing, both by confirming the virus from blood and by analyzing biological material obtained from a skin lesion swab.
